Checking Back on Goals
Editor's note: This was originally sent out in the newsletter on 09/29/18
I have brought up my book goal a few times lately, but today I am taking a different approach. While I have been trying to get through more books to hit my target for the year, I realized that I have started picking shorter books. In the beginning, it just made sense to do this, get one down and on to the next. I realized this is sort of defeating the purpose.
The point was to read more of the things I wanted, to read more in general, to read stuff that was interesting and things I want to learn about. If I am just trying to get through the books then am I really getting what I wanted out of it. To curb this, I have decided to switch from a book goal to a number of pages or time goal; 50 pages a day or 30 minutes a day.
I started thinking about this problem in relation to my other goals, and I realized how easy it could be to slip into going through the motions and losing sight of the big picture. Building a habit is a great way to work things into your life, but if they just end up being done to check them off of a list, it isn’t the same thing. Sometimes you just have to take a step back and remember the reasons for the actions.
It is important to have goals, to push yourself to be better, but you have to know why you are doing it. You don’t want to lose sight of the big picture and get lost in the simple tasks that are supposed to be building to something bigger.

Fall seems to be here in full effect now, it is getting colder, we are a few weeks into football, and the leaves are starting to change. It is my favorite time of year, even if it is super busy for us. Enjoy the weekend and the weather.
Thanks for reading,

P.S. Hey, at least Saturday is still this week...
